Anticipatory Coarticulation of Labialized Velars as a Precursor to Sound Change

چکیده

Phonetic evidence is presented to contribute to a possible explanation of how historical coronalization of labialized velars in front vowel environments may take place. Sound changes of labialized velar /kw/ to coronal /t/ before front vowels /i, e/ are reconstructed for the development of Greek from Indo-European. Philological accounts tend to propose progressive fronting/palatalization preceding or concurrent with loss of secondary labialization of the velar. Phonological accounts suggest constraints against velar fronting in combination with secondary labialization of velars. This paper presents acoustic evidence of synchronic variation in production amongst contemporary speakers of Zapotec, a language which also features labialized velars in its stop inventory, for coarticulatory fronting of labialized velars in front vowel environments.

Investigating variation in English vowel-to-vowel coarticulation in a longitudinal phonetic corpus

Understanding the nature of individual variation in speech, particularly the mechanism underlying such variability, is increasingly important, especially for research on sound change, since such investigations might help explain why sound change happens at all and, conversely, why sound change is so rarely actuated even though the phonetic preconditions are always present in speech. The present...

British English [kw], [k], and [w] distinction in back round vowel contexts

Corpus data from the Audio British National Corpus was used to compare the acoustics of British English stops with velar and/or labial articulation in onset positions preceding back rounded vowels. The acoustics of labialized velar stops in British English have not commonly been described due to their frequent phonological analysis as clusters. Labialized velars have been characterized cross-li...

The effect of prosodic weakening on the production and perception of trans-consonantal vowel coarticulation in German.

The present study considers whether coarticulation in production and its relationship to categorization could provide a synchronic basis for the prevalence of sound change in unstressed syllables. The size of V2-on-V1 coarticulation in the production of /pV1pV2l/ non-words (V1 = /U,Y/ and V2 = /e, o/) produced by German speakers and with stress falling either on the first or second syllable was...

On the causes of compensation for coarticulation: evidence for phonological mediation.

This study examined whether compensation for coarticulation in fricative-vowel syllables is phonologically mediated or a consequence of auditory processes. Smits (2001a) had shown that compensation occurs for anticipatory lip rounding in a fricative caused by a following rounded vowel in Dutch. In a first experiment, the possibility that compensation is due to general auditory processing was in...

Speech sound acquisition, coarticulation, and rate effects in a neural network model of speech production.

This article describes a neural network model of speech motor skill acquisition and speech production that explains a wide range of data on variability, motor equivalence, coarticulation, and rate effects. Model parameters are learned during a babbling phase. To explain how infants learn language-specific variability limits, speech sound targets take the form of convex regions, rather than poin...
